City to start interviewing for Director of Central Services' position

by Jamie Busen for QuincyNews.org and WTAD News

City of Quincy officials will start interviewing candidates Tuesday for the Director of Central Services position.

Director of Human Resources Doug Olson said approximately 20 people applied for the job, and they anticipate interviewing half.

"We have very strong candidates," he said. "It will be a tough decision."

After a delay due to the City's windstorm, "We're going to kick this thing up to full gear next week," Olson said.

The position - which pays between $65,000 and $85,000 - will oversee the City's central services department as well as Quincy Transit Lines. The latter will move under the umbrella of central services; it makes sense from a logistical standpoint, Olson said, as both departments work out of the facility on Jennifer Lane.

"It makes sense to gain some synergies here and utilize the same director," Olson said.

The City's previous Central Services Director Mike Beebe's employment ended with Quincy in the fall of 2009. John Ohnemus was the last director of Transit, and he accepted Quincy's early retirement program offer at the end of 2009. Together they made more than $115,000.

City Engineer Jeff Steinkamp and Airport Director Marty Stegeman have been filling in as interim directors for Central Services and Transit, respectively.

Those picked for an interview will also meet with the City's advisory group, a committee established by Quincy Mayor John Spring when he took office. It has one Republican Alderman - Tony Sassen - and one Democrat, Jack Holtschlag. Director of Administrative Services Gary Sparks and Olson also make up the primary base group. Depending on what the position is, others from departments join as needed.

Olson said they don't have a specific timeline in mind, but he hopes within the next 30 to 45 days, they'll have someone chosen.

He said he and others in the administration have appreciated everyone working together since the departments have been without a director.

"It's been a team effort," he said.
