Indianapolis, Ind. -- Marian University used a 26-6 run over a
13-minute stretch of the first half to help the Knights pull away for
an easy 88-61 victory over Culver-Stockton in the first round of the
Marian Holiday Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.
Both teams began slowly and the Wildcats took their last lead of the
game at 6-5 on two free throws by Trevor Pezley with 13:53 left in the
opening period.
However, over the next 11 minutes, the Wildcats made just two field
goals, two free throws and committed seven turnovers as the Knights
built a 35-20 first half lead.
After shooting 28 percent from the field in the first half, the
Wildcats came out firing in the second half, making 14 of their 26
field goal attempts for 54 percent.
The Knights, however, were able to keep the visitors at arm's length
by making 46 percent of their FG attempts, including nine of 16 from
outside the 3-point arc.
Jason Gillespie led a balanced scoring attack for the Wildcats with 13
points. Phil Peugh, who had a career-high 29 points Wednesday night,
finished with 12 markers, while Denny Revell netted 11 points.
Jordan Ayers and Jordan Lasater grabbed seven rebounds each to lead
the Wildcats in that category. Ayers also recorded three blocked shots
in the game.
Culver-Stockton (2-9) will play the either Brescia (Ky.) or Davenport
(Mich.) on Saturday, December 19. Game time is set for 1 p.m. EST.
