Hawk baseball splits doubleheader in Alabama

The Quincy University baseball team split their weekend opening double header against Northern Alabama dropping game one 7-4 but bouncing back to win 4-3 in game two.

Quincy jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two before holding off a late rally by Northern Alabama. The Hawks got on the board in the second inning when Dillon York doubled and Brett Zurliene came around to score on an errant throw on the play. The Hawks added another run in the third inning when Trent Tagliarini picked up an RBI groundout that scored Justin Ritchhart who led the inning off with a walk.

The Hawks pushed the score to 4-0 with two runs in the fifth with Matt Scoggins picking up an RBI sacrifice fly and Tagliarini following two batters later with an RBI single that scored Ritchhart. Northern Alabama put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of an error, hit by pitch and wild pitch. The Hawks were able to end the rally when Travis Ruppel struck out the game's final batter with runners on first and third.

Brett Zurliene picked up the win, going six innings and allowing no runs on five hits while striking out seven. Ruppel recorded the save going one inning and allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out two. Dillon York led Quincy with a perfect 3-for-3 game while Ritchhart finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

In game one Northern Alabama started strong with a four run first inning, doing so on five hits in the frame. Quincy picked up a run in the second inning when Wade Koester led the inning off with a home run. Greg Van Leer followed with a single and two batters later Justin Dunning singled and after drawing a two out walk, the Hawks left the bases loaded. Quincy cut the score to 4-2 in the top of the fifth when Matt Scoggins came in to score on a double play ball. Northern Alabama extended their lead to 6-2 in the bottom frame and tacked on another run in the sixth to make the score 7-2.

Quincy was able to plate a run in the final two innings to make the score 7-4 but were unable to get the score any closer. Dunning and Scoggins each finished with two hits for Quincy while Caleb Zang took the loss going five innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out three. Quincy falls to 6-3 overall and returns to action in another double header against Northern Alabama to conclude their series.
