Hawks win QU/Subway Holiday Tournament

The Quincy University men's basketball team captured the 10th annual Quincy/Subway Holiday Tournament title with a 76-66 win over Mesa State College in a battle between two nationally ranked teams. Quincy, ranked #24, held the #22 ranked Mavericks to just 40-percent shooting in the game.

Quincy started the game strong, taking an 18-5 lead with a pair of three pointers from Josh Edmonds and a third from Mookie Pierre. Mesa State closed the score to 37-33 with just over one-minute left in the first half but a three from Billy Hayes stopped the Mavericks run and Quincy took a 42-36 lead into the break.

Mesa State took their first lead since the game's opening points when Justin Ashbaugh scored to make the score 49-47 with 15:06 remaining. However the Hawks responded with a three from Tyler Burke on their next trip down and never trailed in the contest again. The key series in the game came with just seven-minutes left when Mesa State had closed to within four points. The Hawks defense rose to the occasion and swatted back to back shots, with Pierre and Billy Baptist recording the blocks.

Quincy shot 48-percent from the floor as a team, including 54-percent in the first-half. Josh Edmonds led the way for Quincy with 18 points while Pierre and Brock each added 13 points and Baptist finished with 11 points. Quincy improves to 10-0 on the season, tying the school record for longest win streak to open a season with the 1988-89 team. Following the championship game Josh Edmonds, Billy Baptist and Mookie Pierre were named to the All-Tournament team as were Central State's Cole Prophet and Mesa State's Mike Dominguez. Central State won the consolation game of the tournament 71-58 over Truman State.
