The Quincy University softball team had their 13 game winning streak end in the second game of a home double header against Drury University but not before Lady Hawk pitcher Torie Bunzell recorded her sixth career no-hitter.
Quincy opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first as Whitney Kroeger started the inning with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt moved Kroeger over and Erin Gregory followed with a single to set up runners at first and third. Bridgette Clark then came in to pinch run and stole second with Ashleigh Roscetti singling home Kroeger to put Quincy up 1-0. Megan Corey followed with a bunt in which Clark delayed before breaking for home, sliding past the catcher to put Quincy up 2-0.
After striking out one batter in the first inning, Bunzell found her groove in the second, striking out all three batters. Bunzell rolled through the Lady Panthers hitters with ease, allowing just three walks in the game while striking out 13, including 12 swinging. The Lady Hawks added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Roscetti hit a sacrifice fly that scored Melissa Sommerfeld who had doubled to start the inning. Quincy out hit Drury 8-0 in the game with Roscetti and Kroeger each picking up two hits.
The Lady Hawks bats went quiet in game two, managing just three hits. Both pitchers battled back and forth with Drury able to finally get on the board in the sixth inning. Drury picked up a one out double down the line and then on a ground ball to short, took advantage of an errant throw. Drury then scored on a ground out back to the pitcher with the runner on third waiting until the throw went to first.
Quincy was primed in the bottom of the seventh with the heart of their order up and Gregory singling off the shortstop's glove to start the inning. However after a sacrifice moved the runner to second the Lady Hawks next two batters were retired snapping Quincy's 13 game winning streak.
Lauren Francis was the tough luck loser going seven innings and allowing one unearned run on just four hits while striking out six. Gregory led the way for Quincy with two hits as Kroeger was the only other Lady Hawk to pick up a hit in game two.
Quincy is now 21-8 overall and 11-3 in the GLVC. They return to action on Sunday at home in another GLVC double header when they host Missouri S&T at noon.
