The Quincy University baseball team dropped both games of an opening weekend double header against Rockhurst University on Saturday, falling 8-4 in game one and 7-1 in game two.
Rockhurst wasted little time in taking control, plating six runs in the first inning of game one. After their lead off hitter struck out looking to start the game Rockhurst picked up a triple, single and back to back doubles to take a 3-0 lead. They then added three two out RBI singles to grab a 6-0 advantage over Quincy.
Quincy was held to just one hit in the first three innings and did not get a runner to third base until the fifth inning. Rockhurst added to their lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Quincy finally managed to push some runs across the plate in the eighth inning, scoring four runs on four hits and an error. Justin Dunning started the inning with a single and was followed by a walk to Wade Koester. Brett Zurliene loaded the bases with an infield hit and Fabian Oechsle drove in the first run of the game for Quincy with a ground out. Greg Van Leer followed with an RBI single to center field on which the ball was then misplayed, allowing another run to come in. Brad Salsman picked up a two out RBI single to left to cap the scoring and make the score 7-4.
Rockhurst got one of the runs back with a squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth to make the score 8-4 entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Quincy threatened in the bottom half, loading the bases with two outs but grounded out to short to end the game. Caleb Zang took the loss for Quincy going 5 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits while striking out six. Zurliene paced the Hawks offense going 4-for-5 while Van Leer and Salsman each added two hits.
Game began as a pitcher's duel with neither team scoring until the fourth inning and Rockhurst holding a 1-0 lead entering the sixth frame. Rockhurst then opened the game up with a three run top of the sixth and three more in the seventh. Quincy managed just five hits in the game as Christopher Conner took the loss going five innings and allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out one. The Hawks bullpen was hit hard, allowing six runs, three earned, and six hits in just two innings of relief. Fabian Oechsle was the only Quincy player with a multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Quincy and Rockhurst will conclude their weekend series with another double header on Sunday beginning at noon at QU Stadium.
