QU softball sets single season home run record

The Quincy University softball team put together a total team effort in a double header sweep on the road over Lincoln University, setting a new team record for home runs in a season along the way. Quincy took game one 12-2, hitting two home runs, and game two 10-0, hitting their 43rd home run of the season and setting a new school mark.

Quincy scored in every inning of game one, including a five run sixth inning. Whitney Kroeger set the tone for the Lady Hawks with a lead off single, then stealing second and advancing to third on a single by Melissa Sommerfeld. Erin Gregory then put Quincy on the board with a two run double. The Lady Hawks added a run in the second when Kroeger singled in Katelyn Blanas who had doubled. Rachel Trokey and Blanas added RBI singles in the third to put Quincy up 5-1 and they pushed the lead to 6-1 with a run in the fourth.

Blanas added another RBI single in the fifth before Quincy exploded for five runs on five hits, including two home runs in the sixth to bust the game wide open. Megan Corey singled in Laura Molinar to start the scoring in the sixth and Tiffany Brakeville followed with a two run home to center field. Quincy started the scoring with a two out rally in the third as Kroeger singled and stole second. Sommerfeld followed with an RBI double and after a walk to Gregory, Ashleigh Roscetti stepped to the plate with a record in mind. Roscetti ripped the ball deep to left field, clearing the fence for a home run and putting Quincy up 4-0. The home run was the 43rd of the season for the team, surpassing the previous team record of 42 set in the 2008 season.

Quincy added two more runs in the fourth as Kroeger hit a two run single. The Lady Hawks added four more runs in the sixth as Lea Dunlap got the inning started with a single and was followed by an infield single by Bridgette Clark. Sommerfeld followed with a two run single and Brakeville added another RBI later in the inning as Quincy opened the score up to 10-0.

Lauren Francis picked up the win, going three innings and allowing just two hits, while Megan Corey threw three innings of relief and allowed just three hits as the two combined for the shutout. Kroeger, Sommerfeld, Dunlap, Clark and Cristina Hughes each added two hits in the game.

Quincy pounded out 30 hits in the two games with 16 of 17 hitters recording at least one hit on the day.
