Quincy University sports roundup

With emotions running high not only due to their 2010 season opener but also because of the passing of long time announcer Tom Baker, the Quincy University men's soccer team put together an impressive 2-0 win over NAIA #21 ranked McKendree University.

Although McKendree out shot Quincy 17-11 in the game and 10-6 in the first-half, Quincy was able to capitalize on their chances. The Hawks got on the board mid-way through the first when Grant Ellison buried a shot from 10-yards out off a pass from Greg Schaeffer. McKendree possessed the ball for much of the half however the Hawk defense held strong and prevented many true scoring chances for the Bearcats. McKendree's best chance came at the 35-minute mark when Kavel Smith ripped a shot that stopped by Hawk keeper D.J. Lampert.

The Hawks were opportunistic again in the second-half when their scoring chance started on a simple throw-in. Jake Pittroff took the throw-in and put it near the box where Schaeffer slipped a pass to Ryan Hirtz. Hirtz wasted little time in getting off the shot with the ball deflecting off the Bearcat keeper and a defenders foot before finding the back of the net.

Lampert made four saves in recording the shutout for the Hawks as Quincy improves to 1-0 on the season. They return to action on Sunday at home when they host St. Edward's at 12 p.m.

It may have taken until being down two sets to none in the final game of the tournament but the Quincy University women's volleyball team was finally able to rally and pull off a thrilling win in a five set match, recording their first win of the 2010 season.

The Lady Hawks dropped both opening sets against Alderson Broaddus in the final match of the Quincy University Tournament, falling 26-24 and 25-21, after holding leads late in both sets.

Quincy asserted themselves in the third set to take an early 9-3 lead. The Lady Hawks took early command thanks to back to back aces by Lyndsay Kooi and a strong performance by Christine Williams. The Battlers fought their way back into the match, closing to within three points at 22-19 but the Lady Hawks held off the charge and won the set on a Williams kill. The two teams remained even throughout the fourth set with Quincy holding an 11-9 lead. The Battlers however committed four errors to give Quincy a cushion and the Lady Hawks did not look back cruising to a 25-18 win and tying the match at 2-2.

The Lady Hawks kept their momentum going in the fifth set as they scored the first seven points. A kill by Briann Joslin put Quincy on the board and gave the Lady Hawks the serve where Chelbie Hanohano served six straight points for Quincy. Leading 10-2 Lauren Ketchum kept up the Lady Hawk ace attack with back to back aces. The Lady Hawks finally recorded the match's winning point on an error by the Battlers. The Lady Hawks won the match by the scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 and 15-6.

Williams led Quincy with 11 kills while Joslin added nine kills and Brittany Atkinson added seven kills with no attack errors. Kooi finished with 28 assists while Hanohano added 18 digs.

Earlier in the day Quincy dropped a 3-2 match to Clarion, falling by the scores of 15-25, 25-12, 25-20, 15-25 and 16-14. It marked the second time in the team's first three games they lost in five sets. Quincy hit just .110 in the match, after hitting .545 in the first set with 13 kills and just one error. Williams led the way with 11 kills while Kooi finished with 33 assists and 10 digs.

Quincy is now 1-3 on the season and returns to action next weekend when they compete in the Nebraska-Kearney Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
