The Hawks opened the 2010 season in an unenviable position, facing #5 FCS ranked SIU Carbondale on the road as the Salukis christened their brand new stadium. The Hawks held strong early on and trailed just 28-7 at halftime but saw the Salukis score three touchdowns in the first six-minutes of the second half as SIU Carbondale went on for a 70-7 win over Quincy.
The Hawk offense showed early signs of success with DeShun Smith taking an end-around for a 13-yard gain on the game’s second play. The Hawks Antonio Chow followed with a six yard rush but the offense stalled after that with a false start and incomplete pass. The Salukis took their opening drive of the game 75 yards on seven plays, ending with a 16-yard touchdown run by Lucien Walker. Walker’s name would be called often in the game as he added a 4-yard touchdown on the Salukis next possession as well.
Quincy had a nice drive going late in the
first quarter, moving the ball 23 yards on five plays but fumbling the ball at
their own 43-yard line. The second quarter started with the Salukis extending
the score to 21-0 on an 11-yard pass from Chris Dieker to Jeff Evans.
The Hawks responded with an impressive return
from Adam Dry on the ensuing kickoff. Dry took the ball from his own 13-yard
line, made a move around a Saluki defender and then broke into the open before
he finally pulled down at the Saluki 31-yard line. The Hawks were facing a
3rd-and-9 when quarterback Bobby Brenneisen connected with Justin
Dickens on a 30-yard fade pattern into the end-zone with Dickens making a
jumping grab over a Saluki defender to put Quincy on the board for the first
time in the 2010 season.
After the Salukis tacked on another touchdown
to make the score 28-7 Quincy had their longest drive of the game so far, going
47 yards and taking nearly 5-minutes off the clock. The Hawks picked up key
plays on the drive from Robenson Merci with a 10-yard run and a 14-yard pass
from Brenneisen to Smith. However the Hawks drive came to an end when they were
stopped on a 4th-and-1 when they attempted a deep pass trying to
catch the Salukis off guard.
The Hawks defense stopped the Salukis for the
first time in the game on the next drive when Adam Dry picked off a Paul
McIntosh pass at the Quincy 39-yard line and returned it nine yards. However the
Hawks were unable to take advantage of the turnover and were forced to punt the
ball. The Salukis took a 28-7 lead into halftime as Quincy was able to control
the clock and slow the Salukis offense down.
The Salukis broke the game open early in the
second half as they scored three touchdowns in the first six-minutes of the
third quarter. Quincy ran just 11 plays total in the third quarter and compiled
a total of 17 yards. The Salukis took a 56-7 lead into the third quarter and
cruised to a 70-7 victory.
After compiling 131 yards of total offense in
the first half Quincy was held to just 63 total yards of offense in the second
half. The Salukis meanwhile piled up 496 yards of total offense, including over
300 yards on the ground. Quincy starting quarterback Bobby Brenneisen finished
the game 10-of-18 passing for 89 yards with one touchdown. Robenson Merci led
the team on the ground with 20 yards on seven carries while Jeacky Charles added
four receptions for 21 yards. Aaron Ballanger led Quincy with seven total
tackles while Toryan Smith and Todd Jordan each added six tackles.
Quincy is now 0-1 on the season and will face
#16 ranked Walsh University on the road next Saturday.
