A disturbing trend reared its ugly head again Saturday afternoon as
the Culver-Stockton College men's basketball team lost to Davenport
University (Mich.) 80-64 in the consolation game of the Marian (Ind.)
Holiday Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.
For much of the season, the Wildcats, seemingly, go through periods of
the first half where they have trouble scoring. It happened again
Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats and Davenport, which is ranked 19th in the NAIA Division
II poll, were tied 20-20 after a layup by Steven Crawford with nine
minutes, two seconds remaining in the half.
From that point, Culver-Stockton was outscored 23-3 the rest of the
half as the Bulldogs built a 43-23 halftime advantage. The Wildcats
were just 1 of 9 from the field and 1 of 4 from the free throw line
during that span. They also committed nine turnovers.
As is the case in most of the games this season, the Wildcats
responded with strong second half, outscoring their opponents 41-37.
Jason Gillespie recorded a team-high 16 points to lead the Wildcat
offensive attack. He was 6 of 11 from the field in 25 minutes of
action. Gillespie was named to the all-tournament team.
Jordan Ayers added 12 points and three blocks, and Phil Peugh grabbed
a team-best eight rebounds.
The Wildcats (2-10) return to action on Friday, January 1, against
Columbia College on the first day of the Columbia Classic in Columbia,
Mo. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
