Quincy pistolsmith Richard Heinie auctions custom-built pistol

Quincyan Richard Heinie, a world renowned pistolsmith, has built a one-of-a-kind, commemorative pistol that is being auctioned on gunbroker.com, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the 2010 St. Jude Quincy to Peoria Run.

The 1911 pistol is custom-built and has a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital logo. The serial number, STJ 2010, coincides with the 2010 St. Jude Run.

Heinie and his wife, Marilyn, of Heinie Specialty Products, along with employee Sara Davis, are avid supporters of the annual run, which benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and its Midwest Affiliate in Peoria.

The Heinies are four-year veterans of the run, and this will be Davis’ second year participating. A cancer survivor himself, Heinie revved up his participation and support of the charity this year by pursuing others within the firearms industry to donate many parts, as well as time, to build the commemorative pistol.

The pistol was donated by the Springfield Armory. The pistol grips are scrimshaw engraved by Kurtz Miller of Eureka Springs, Ark., and the slide machining and finish is by MD Custom Machine.

To view or bid on the pistol, go to www.gunbroker.com

The 2010 St. Jude Run will take place Aug. 6-7. Runners and volunteers make the 135-mile trek relay-style from Quincy to Peoria to raise money and build awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“This run has been a life changing experience for me,” said Davis, who ran 45 of the 135 miles last year. “Just being blessed with the ability to participate and the opportunity to make a difference in even one child’s life is more than enough motivation to cover the miles.”

For more information on how to participate in or donate to the St. Jude Run, go to www.quincystjuderun.org or contact Justin Wollbrink, run coordinator, at (217) 224-9043 or justin@jhconcrete.com.
