Winners in JWCC creative writing contest announced

Winners in John Wood Community College’s 2010 Creative Writing Contest have been announced. The competition drew 125 entries from 50 writers in adult and youth categories.  Winners received monetary awards and certificates. 

Serving as judges were Dr. Deirdre Fagan, assistant professor of English at Quincy University (Youth Poetry); Rodney Hart, reporter for The Quincy Herald-Whig (Youth Fiction and Non-fiction); Dr. Mary Ann Klein, retired professor of English at Quincy University (Fiction); Dr. Caroline Collins,  assistant professor of English at Quincy University (Poetry); and Holly Wagner, reporter for The Quincy Herald-Whig (Non-fiction).  

ADULT CATEGORY:

  •  
    • Fiction:   First place – Linda Smith, San Mateo, Calif., Flight; second place– Tony Concannon, Norwood, Mass., Sons and Fathers; third place – Millicent Porter Henry, Hannibal, Mo., Aloha.
    • Non-fiction:  First and second place – Rod McGaughey, Carthage, My First Job and Winky Dink and Us, respectively; third place – Dawn M. Palmer, Quincy, Maddy. 
    • Traditional Rhyming Poetry:  First and second place – Erin Sinnott, Saugerties, N.Y., Winter Born  and Ode to Friendship, respectively; third place – Sharlyn Garcia-Ortiz, Hannibal, Mo., Say Something.
    • Non-rhyming Poetry:  First place – Dwain Preston, Quincy, The Cross-Cut Saw; second  place – Sheila Barksdale, Gainesville, Fla., Last Day of Summer; third place – Erin Sinnott, Saugerties, N.Y., Rock Star Revelations.
    • All Other Poetry Forms:  First place – Joseph Newkirk, Quincy, You Among the Lilies of the Field; second place, Erin Sinnott, Saugerties, N.Y., Wolf and Lamb; third place–Sheila Barksdale, Gainesville, Fla., Widow

YOUTH CATEGORY:

  • Fiction/Non-fiction: First and second place – Kellie Mast, Quincy, The Unknown Potential of a Snow Day and Nothing Changes, respectively.
  • Poetry:  Merit Award – Amber Anthony, LaBelle, Mo., Someplace in Between.

 

      JWCC’s community education office sponsored the competition.
